This is what I have been doing for the past 6 months, I wrote a book! Available as a digital download for Kindle, iPad and PDF (.PDF Files, .EPUB, .MOBI), it guides beginner and intermediate icon designers through the history, theory and creative process of icon design. Covering much more than popular rendering methods (although it includes that too) this book teaches the theory of perspective, lighting and usability with practical advice on Mac OS X, iOS, Android, Windows (XP and Vista) and Linux (Tango) with some tips and tricks on using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

All up there's 270+ pages of content starting with the history of desktop icons (with pictures) and ending with common mistakes and resources.

"Veteran icon designer and Associate Editor of Vectortuts+ Kate McInnes knows a thing or two about icon design. Having worked for years as a successful icon designer, she decided it was time to share that experience with others by teaming up with Rockable Press to write her very first book called Rockstar Icon Designer.

In this book Kate not only teaches you how to whip up a good icon, but she takes you on a crash course through the world of icon design."

McKelly is on Facebook!

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 17, 2011, 4:26 PM
It's been almost a year since Bucket'o'Thought and I started to work on McKelly. So today I'm excited to launch the McKelly Facebook Group. We hope to have our new blog and portfolio up and running in the next few weeks, but for now we have a great "fan bonus" of some iPhone wallpapers for everyone who follows us on facebook.

Join the McKelly Facebook Group.

McKelly on Facebook

Optimized for the iPhone 4's retina screen, these wallpapers are perfectly scaled and ready to bring some doom to your phone. Who said facebook was a soulless corporation hell bent on abusing your privacy?.. Probably us.

Icons and Things

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 3, 2011, 6:19 PM
Some of you may already know that I work for Envato as the associate editor of Vectortuts+ and I spend a bit of time working with GraphicRiver ([link] reviewing files (mostly the icons).

I thought in the new year I should make an icon set to show that I draw more than just vector girls.

Here's a preview of the set (super ugly .jpg version to keep people from cutting them out!) I'm adding around 20 different designs, with various colorways, in 4 sizes (96, 48, 32, 16px) So all up I hope to make 240 icons. These are all made in Photoshop vector shapes with layer styles. Photoshop vector is probably the worst way to use paths - EVER!

Who wants to take bets on how long it will take me to finish the set? 2020?

Ok, so I bought myself yet another years worth of Premium DA, the last time I had one was about 4 years ago... so with all the changes, what should I be doing with the new features?

If I had a premium membership I would be able to embed this video - I'd also be able to escape all the adds that were never here 7 years ago! Damn you online revenue raising!

Anyway, click the link below to get a glimpse at the hectic fly-by-the-seat-of-your-design-pants nature of my illustration process... Yes, this is how I work, no, I don't seem to have a clue what I'm drawing when I start...

Enjoy!

As some of you may already know, I’ve spent the last 3 years of my design career working in-house. Over these years I’ve lived a crazy 14 hour a day, 7 days a week lifestyle and more recently have found myself with more projects than I can manage.

So it’s with much joy and a dash of nervousness that I’m announcing – as of this week – I’m a full time freelancer!

I promise to post some ‘regular’ LK work as soon as it’s finished!

So what's new for Kat?

Well... I'm 1/3 of the powerhouse behind 'Blood Sweat Vector' [link] with the lovely J3 [link] and I'm also the new Associate Editor of Vectortuts+ [link].

On the exhibition front I'm currently working on a piece for Ladie Killerz [link]

How is everyone else? What's new around here?

Woah it was my birthday on the weekend - I'm old and I've been here - on DA -  a very long time...
  • Mood: Hostile
So I got a note today saying that my Japanese Skateboard required a "mature" tag...
despite the fact it hasn't had one for the 4+ years it's been on this site and what the hell is wrong with barely noticeable cartoon nipples that look more like circles than the real thing?

Anyway - that's fine and dandy - BUT - When I tried to get a full frontal photo of a spread vagina taken down for violation of - this is not art its porn - I was told it was staying and not to complain so much! Same thing has happened when I've complained about manga porn depicting young girls...

Well you know what DA?! Why don't you just get it over and done with - turn this entire site into a porn portal for vampire loving, furry f*ck*ng emo teens... You suck!

Yes, it's primary gifting time again… Once a year we buy like we've never bought before, and for those in Australia this is a special time as jolly uncle Kevin has given most of us a handy $1,000 bonus (even more if you're skilled breeders.) So spend like your economy depends on it and join me in a bit of pre gifting madness.

My suggestion? LoungeKat of course - and for the cranky activist or stormcloud in the family? You can't go past Bucket'o'Thought. We've both added a swag of smaller "budget friendly" prints and trinkets for you this holiday season. As for the economic downturn - we would like to remind all of our US customers that the Australian dollar has fallen to a massive low- That means you save money and we still get to eat. Yay!

Every order shipped between now and the end of December will include a free greeting card! Awesome!

Sure you do... Why the hell wouldn't you?!

Not like I get any love and comments from my 1,124 watchers, oh no-no - Just love from the usual suspects - and I love you all back so much!(You know who you are)

Oh well, my stats show that some of those silent bastards like to click links and are more than likely selfish people too... So this is sure to please more than a few unknown "fans"

There's a LoungeKat + Bucket'o'Thought promo over at Smitteniche at the moment, the deal? All you need to do is go to BoT's store and take a look around then go onto the Smitteniche blog and leave a comment about what product you liked the most.

The death of Deviant Art

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 3, 2008, 6:58 PM
Yes, I'm thinking of leaving this horrid portal of scum.

I'm convinced that it's now the home of soft porn for people who can't afford a subscription to Suicide Girls and crap posing as gold.

There was a deviation out there that showed a full on view of a woman's vagina and when I complained about the appropriateness of this image deviant art said it was art.

In past eras of this site that would not have been the case.

Really, I'm not a prude, I just don't want my work to be amongst the likes of these submissions.

I'll be off to Flickr and Behance where the standard is better and I don't have to put up with this shit!

Fuck the new $$$ crazy regime.

New style trial for LK.

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 29, 2008, 7:59 PM
So I'm currently working on a new piece (a commission) and am trying out something a little different.

Here's a tiny bit of the final piece for you to look at.

What's the verdict? A little too boy'ish or a good change from the girly crap?

Fafi + Vogue = Kidsploitation!

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 20, 2008, 9:50 PM

So allot of people have shown me the recent fashion spread by Fafi and Vogue (childrens edition)
and if you haven't seen it you can see some photos here. [link]

And somehow I was supposed to find it cute or inspirational because, among other things, I draw sexy girls too...

But this is where I draw the line - The line between post pubescent and pre pubescent girls have blurred over the last decade or so and we are now faced with a huge dilemma - the over sexualisation of girls, who don't even know what it is to be sexual, and a whole industry that profits from this degradation.

So here's my reply to all who care...

The first ever collaborative print from LoungeKat and Sean Kelly.. its extremely big (90x122cm) and extremely limited - 10 prints worldwide!

Prints (Giclée print on cotton rag paper.) are available from bucketothought.com
